The following activities are planned for this event. The techniques shown are designed for use by typical adopters who don't necessarily have advanced horse gentling skills.

Gentling Wild Horses - 101

  • Basic approaches when working in a pen with a wild horse.

  • Desensitizing wild horses to humans.

  • Reducing stress and generating curiosity.

  • Making first contact.

The Bamboo Pole Method

  • Making first contact with a bamboo pole.

  • Desensitizing the wild horse to touch.

  • Using the pole to get "up close and personal."

  • Itchy spots and touchy spots.

  • General safety principles.


The Sliding Neck Loop & Quick Halter

  • Putting a safe loop on a wild horse.

  • Teaching the horse to yield to pressure.

  • Intermediate sliding loop techniques."

  • Making a "quick halter."


Using a "Safe Squeeze" chute

  • Safe squeeze safety issues.

  • First contact in the squeeze.

  • Generating responses, not reactions.

  • Intermediate safe squeeze uses.


Basic Round Corral Techniques

  • Generating curiosity, not flight.

  • Wild horse: no lead vs. on the lead.

  • Drawing flight prone horses.

  • Multiple humans in the round pen!
