See live gentling of wild horses using equipment and methods that you can use!

  • View demonstrations of practical wild horse gentling and training.

  • Interact with the Wild Horse Mentors as they work with unhandled horses.

  • Meet the crew who gentled and trained wild horses for the Salt Lake Olympic Games.

  • Adopt a wild horse and take it home!

  • There is no charge to spectate and learn these gentling techniques.

Please note: The schedule represents the kinds of activities that will take place. The actual sequence of activities is subject to adjustment based on the needs of the Expo and animals being handled.
Friday, August 20:     10 AM - 5 PM Cutting Arena

  • 8:15: Introduction of Clinicians

  • 9:00: "Gentling Wild Horses 101"

  • 11:00: "Approach and Retreat" & Clicker Training

  • 1:00: Gentling with a Bamboo Pole

  • 3:00: "Wild Horse" on the Lead Line

  • Plus Many Other Presentations and Demos

(The wild horse mentors will also be gentling horses the whole day.)


Saturday August 21:     8 AM - 5 PM Cutting Arena

  • 8:00: Safe Gentling Practices

  • 9:00: Prison Horse Program Training Methods

  • 11:00: Positive Responses in the Round Pen

  • 2:00: BLM / NDA Wild Horse Adoption (Pavilion)

  • 3:00: Preparing a Horse for Saddling (following the adoption)

  • Plus Many Other Presentations and Demos

(The wild horse mentors will also be gentling horses the whole day.)


Sunday, August 22:     8 AM - 4 PM Cutting Arena

  • All Day Bombproofing Class
    (Participate with your adopted horse!)

  • Basic pressure and release

  • Focus and communication

  • Handling progressively difficult obstacles

  • Helmets and appropriate clothing mandatory!

(Plus wild horse mentors working with horses for the whole period)
