On February 6th we vaccinated the burros. This process required us to move the burros into a safe squeeze. Before and after vaccinating we touched and rubbed on the burros. They all seemed to take things pretty well.

The next day volunteer Lavonne Hutting sat in with the burros in the main corral and decided to entice them with treats. On the whole they were pretty cooperative.

Higgins and Dalton check out the offering
Gray Cloud samples some hay
Gray Cloud comes around the fence to join the group
Lacy makes an approach from the other side
With the burros tracked in on the treats, Lavonne decided to up the ante. She provided them with a bucket of All-in-One (ground alfalfa and oat hay).

Would the burros tolerate being petted in order to get some goodies?

Checking out the bucket
Lots of ears in the bucket
Rubbing Lacy
An ear massage for Gray Cloud
Carmen and Nacho aren't so sure
Getting used to hand motion
Giving Dalton a rub
Two hands on two burros
Not bad for first contact for burros that were trapped such a short time ago. These Sheldon burros have really nice temperaments for gentling.

They also get along very well socially. The whole mob will eat off of a single pile of hay with hardly any shoving or bickering, then the group will move on together to the next pile of hay. If this was a group of horses thrown together there would undoubtedly be some fights if their feed wasn't competely spread out.
