FOUNDATION FOR SHACKELFORD HORSES
Shackelford Ponies Available for Adoption in North Carolina

Last Updated: 1-3-01

Webmaster's Note:

We have followed the incredible "Banker Ponies" for some time. They are descendents of shipwrecked spanish horses on the outer banks of North Carolina. Please check out The Wild Horses of Shackelford Banks. These are great, tough little horses that are even used for handicapped riding.

Margaret Fondry writes:

"We have the following four boys available for adoption:

"Top left is Diablo (4 years old), a dark almost-black bay.
Diablo has been placed!

"Top right is Tango (5), a bay with one white foot behind.

"Bottom left is Jersey (2), a mahogany bay with a heart shaped star

"Bottom right is Satyrn (3), who is black with a snip on his nose.

"They are all very different personality-wise and body type. Only Satyrn has been led at this point; the other three have been handled very little. Diablo is the son of Dino, the black horse standing on the dune featured on the 2000 LRTC Christmas card. As you may recall, Dino passed away right before Christmas.

"All of the boys have current vaccinations (including West Nile Virus), negative Coggins, and are on daily dewormer. As are all Shackleford horses, they are very inquisitive, smart, and quick learners once you gain their trust. Diablo and Jersey will likely be the largest, Tango is not far behind, and all three will likely be large enough for a woman or small man to ride. Satyrn will likely remain "pony" size. All are sturdy enough to pull a cart. Tango has shown signs of a four-beat gait when on the move."

WILD HORSE SANCTUARY
Northern California Foals Available for Adoption

40 wild foals are up for adoption at the Wild Horse Sanctuary on the last weekend of October. Adopters must have an adoption form completed and a site inspection. If you are not local to the Wild Horse Sanctuary, you can submit a letter of capability to provide for the foal from a reputable veterinarian. You should also have your own horse transporter.

Webmaster's Note:

Stock type trailers or slant loaders with swing gates removed are recommended. 2-horse straight load trailers can be dangerous for foals unless the center dividers are removed and the mangers are securely plywooded over so that the foals won't try to jump into them and get injured.

You can contact the Wild Horse Sanctuary at:

Wild Horse Sanctuary
P.O. Box 30
Shingletown, CA 96088
Telephone & Fax 530-222-5728

Or log onto their web site at www.wildhorsesanctuary.org.
