OLYMPIC WILD HORSE & BURRO PROJECT
Part Two

For background information on this project please click Here.

Originally mentor Joyce "Burro" North was going to make the run to Ridgecrest with us and haul the burros and we would bring back the horses. Unfortunately she had some repair issues with her truck! We were able to borrow a trailer from wild horse adopter Cheryl Fraschieri and Toby Marroquin pulled it with his new pickup that only had about 140 miles on it! (What a way to break in a new pickup... a 1300 mile trip and a load of burros!)

The Ridgecrest facility was impressive. They had spacious accommodations for hundreds of horses and burros, and even one overweight mule! We drove out into the corrals in a John Deere Gator and most of the animals seemed hardly disturbed by our presence. Some even came up and investigated us. It was apparent that the animals were well treated and that the BLM staff wasn't causing them any undue stress.

The facility is too large to photograph.
This view shows about ten percent of it.

The BLM crew gave us plenty of time to make our selections. Actually we had to hustle in an attempt to beat soaring temperatures and a fierce windstorm that was building up in the San Joaquin Valley. We didn't manage to avoid either but we all arrived safely before dark and everyone got sorted into his or her proper pen.

Wild Horse Competition
When held to appropriate numbers that the land can support, wild horses do not unreasonably compete with native species for food and water, and in some instances their presence is beneficial to the land, other animals and plant communities.

This is not a BLM operated or BLM sponsored site. It is run by private wild horse and burro enthusiasts.
