PART SEVEN

The Virginia City 4th of July Parade

This page is a continuation of a series that starts at Part One.

  TROOPER'S FIRST PARADE

Road Trips for Families has named Virginia City in its Top Ten Places to Spend Fourth of July. (Source: the Virginia City News.) So the town is really bustling. The parade, while very intimate for spectators lining the narrow street, can be a little daunting for inexperienced horses. Clearly the training and desensitizing provided by the prison training program paid off as two newly adopted horses from the program, Trooper and Big-N, joined in the festivities.

These two mustangs joined with a few other denizens of the range in the entry sponsored by the Wild Ass Women. This group primarily adopts and rescues former wild burros, but they always let the mustangs tag along. Big-N was ridden by Thomas Smittle who actually trained him when the horse was in the program. Big-N was adopted by Jill Starr of Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue.

Everyone arriving at the staging area.

Our turn to line up.

Little one-month old DeeDee gets started.
Sarah, with her trainer Bonnie Replogle.
(Sarah wasn't quite ready to be ridden in all this action.)
Forward, Ho!
